Lilo & Stitch 2-Disc Big Wave Edition
Editor's Note: Non-remix release specific portions of this review are from the original theatrical run of Lilo & Stitch, the movie.
Lilo & Stitch came at a time when Disney needed it most. There has not been a character like Stitch in a long time. Stitch was Disney's response to Adam Sandler movies, the relative who never knows when to leave, and then ultimately the outcast who steals our heart. That's what Lilo & Stitch is all about, being an outcast but still finding your place.
First of all, the film is absolutely beautiful to look at! The main reason for this is Disney breaking away from the cookie-cutter cartoon types of previous films and embracing a brand new artist design that has no sharp edges to any animation, and the use of water colors as backgrounds. The effect is such a soft and comfortable look that I am surprised Disney has not tried it again. When you give this film a second or third look, take time to just look at the backgrounds! Incredible work.
Stitch himself is a marvel. Many people may feel he has been overused by Disney in their marketing. (Again remember Disney has not had such a wide appeal for a character since Simba.) In my opinion, Disney just knows where they can grab the audience; and when Stitch is on screen, you watch!
The story is a simple one. Have you seen E.T? Now add some Disney Magic and some attitude. Stitch crash lands on earth as an experiment gone awry. Lilo needs a companion and picks up a "Puppy" at the nearest shelter. Alien meets Girl, and finds a family. It is heart-string pulling material as the aliens come back to get Stitch, and his family must protect and save him. Add in some hilarious routines to Elvis tunes, and the making of a classic is at hand.
This film will appeal to all ages, and when I say all ages, I mean all ages -- from four-year-olds to bikers in Daytona. Most people love this movie. Yes, I am one of them. It is just plain and crazy fun. How could you not enjoy watching a two-foot blue alien, out of his mind on caffeine, destroying a scale model of San Francisco, while acting like a 70-foot Godzilla! And is it just me or when he rolls himself into a ball and rolls around, it could not be any cuter.
Now with the release of Lilo & Stitch 2-Disc Big Wave Edition, Disney has provided the best possible treatment of this now classic Disney film, including all new behind the features and a brand new transfer.
The first disc contains the film and some great interactive features for children and the children young at heart. However, the true treasures of this release can be found on the second disc.
The second disc contains a 2-hour documentary presented in anaphoric widescreen of the making of Lilo & Stitch, including some footage from while they were filming it at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Probably the most interesting aspect of the documentary (which is also included in the deleted scenes) is the discussion about the removal of the 747 sequence due to the 9/11 attacks. It appears that enough time has passed so Disney thought it would be appropriate to release the footage from the vault. It is also great to see the climatic ending the way it was originally scripted.
For any lover of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch this is a definite “must own”. The only way Disney Home Entertainment can improve on this release is when they finally release the Blu-ray.
