Bedknobs and Broomsticks
On September 8, 2009, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released a special edition of the 1971 classic, "Bedknobs and Broomsticks". It was entitled “The Enchanted Musical Edition”.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks tells the tale of three displaced World War II children: Charlie, Carrie and Paul, who find themselves in the care of Miss Price (Angela Lansbury). Angela is a witch. Although her early attempts at magic create hilarious results, she successfully casts a traveling spell on an ordinary bedknob, and they fly to the fantastic, animated Isle of Naboombu to find a powerful spell that will save England!
If one would ask what other Disney film to compare Bedknobs and Broomsticks to, the answer is quite simple -- Marry Poppins. Both stories deal with children, magic, and adventure. While Angela Lansbury is not quite Julie Andrews, she is cast perfectly in her role. She along with the films other adult co-star, David Tomlinson, add a special touch to the film.
Having been made seven years after Marry Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks’s special effects are simply amazing. It won the best special effects academy award in 1971. From the end fight scence to the great combination of live action and animation in Naboombu, the film gives you all the eye candy you would ever want while not sacrificing the story for the sake of the effects.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks, “The Enchanted Musical Edition”, spots a brand new digital remastered video and soundtrack. It is presented in it’s original theatrical aspect ratio and contains bonus features, such as: THE WIZARDS OF SPECIAL EFFECTS (a behind-the-scnees look into the special effects used in the film hosted by Wizards of Waverly Place’s Jennifer Stone), Music Magic (a behind the scences look at the Sherman Brothers songs used in the film), a deleted song (A Step in the Right Direction), and much more.
The one gripe I have with this release is the same one that appears to keep constantly popping up with Disney, and that is Blu-ray. Disney, who is very much a huge supporter of Blu-ray, is constantly putting their live-action classic titles only on DVD instead of Blu-ray. At this point, I have still not received a valid answer why; and this being such a Disney classic, it does merit the high definition treatment it deserves.
If you have not yet seen Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks, please immediately fly your bed to the store and pick up this Disney classic. If you are already familiar with the film, I am sure you are already there!
