Monsters, Inc. Review
In the spirit of a great summer of Disney movies I present my all time top Pixar movie review. Cream of the crop, king of the hill, unbeatable, top dog, head monster! Yes any of these could easily describe the wonder that is Pixar’s Monsters Inc.
Why would I just crown this the king of all Pixar movies? Well Toy Story has a great deal to do with it. Toy Story is a benchmark movie. It is the Steamboat Willie of Pixar. Another movie had to come along and stand on it’s own, and spur a whole new love for Pixar. That movie was Monsters Inc. It did what Lion King did. It brought it’s animation studio to a new place. It single handily took cement and placed Pixar in the mouths of every moviegoer on earth. With a story as original as any we have seen, and with characters, and humor that beat most adult comedies on the big screen, Monsters ruled.

Artistically Monsters is well. . . a Monster! Yes it made artistic strides with fur, effects, and such. But what Monsters really did was show us what a bunch of animators with some great humor could imagine lies within our childhood closets. Mike & Sully are by far one of my favorite buddies on film. Yes Woody & Buzz are up there too but not in this same envelope. These friends played off each other perfectly. They seemed like any two guys we would run into at any office, or warehouse. Billy Crystal and John Goodman should have been nominated for something. Some parts of this movie will bring tears to your eyes from laughing. I personally feel Crystal found a great niche with animation he has never really gotten back to since Monsters.
The story is one straight from our dreams. Monsters that need screams from kids to power their cities. And one small unforgettable child who steals their hearts and makes them see a new way to do their jobs! Along the way we are thrown so much eye candy, and side jokes that our sides hurt. Monsters pulls off what very few movies animated or live can do. An original story. Original characters. Something that appeals to both young and old. This magic is searched for, but barely found. This is pure Disney / Pixar gold.
Grab the DVD now because from what I hear Monsters will be going to that great big vault soon. It is worth repeated viewings, it is a must have and a must see. Monsters Inc. will have you proud to know what Disney / Pixar can do when passionate people come together to write a story about a little girl and some incredible monsters.
