Beginning this summer, the Walt Disney World Resort will have a new attraction that will educate people on hurricanes, and their impact on homes old and new. The attraction will be based on 2004's Hurricane Charley. StormStruck: The Tale of Two Homes will be housed in Epcot's Innoventions Pavilion and is scheduled to debut in late August. The attraction will show what happened to a basically brand new house compared to a 43 year old house on the same block during the storm. It is to show what people can do to protect their homes from total devastation. The homes are based on the residences of Chris Webb and Jim Minardi, neighbors who had completely opposite experiences during Hurricane Charley. Chris Webb's home in Punta Gorda was virtually untouched with the exception of damage to the pool cover. Across the street, Jim Minardi's home had the roof ripped off and the interior gutted. He says that his home was "A total loss. We scraped it off the lot and started over."
Joe Tankersley, an "Imagineer" with the Walt Disney Co.'s creative and design group says, "What if we could put you in the middle of a storm and make it your job to figure out how to make a safer house?" He went on to say that "All the information about mitigation techniques . . . weren't really as important as getting people to understand, 'Hey, you can do something. It's in your hands. You can make your home safer.' "
Visitors to the attraction will don 3-D glasses and experience the fury of the storm and race against the clock to see what they can do to make the homes safer. When the attraction ends, you can visit a "Weather Mitigation Research Lab" where you can learn building techniques that will make your home more weather-resistant.
