Epcot® Overview

Epcot SpaceShip Earth Epcot, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow opened in Orlando Florida on October 1, 1982. This park was designed to "entertain, inform and inspire". This showplace of technology and cultural diversity, is a blend of the educational as well as the entertaining. In planning the development of Epcot, Walt Disney said that Epcot would never be completed and would "always be introducing and testing and demonstrating new materials and systems".

Epcot consists of two themed areas, Future World and World Showcase. Future World features rides, displays and attractions that focus on the world we live in today and the possiblilites of tomorrow. Around the World Showcase lagoon are the eleven countries. In the country pavilions, one might find restaurants, exhibits, attractions, and musical or dance performances, all designed to give you a taste of a different culture.

Epcot® History

Disney World Epcot Construction Photo During the construction of Epcot® center nearly 3,000 designers and 4000 construction workers where involved in the building phase 1 of the theme park. By the end of the first year the operational cost of the park was over one billion dollars. During the design phase a 1/8th inch scale model of EPCOT covered over 1,428 sq. ft. which is larger than most homes.

Opening day at EPCOT Center was quite a large event. After all, it was only the third Disney Park opening in history. All of the Disney executives were on hand, and Card Walker, company chairman, read the dedication. On both October 1 and October 2, the Orlando Sentinal had extensive coverage of the new park, including maps, overviews, and a special color section. The actual park dedication was held on October 25, much like the Magic Kingdom in 1971, which also opened on October 1 but had its dedication on October 25.

In 1995 The Disney Company decided to change the name of EPCOT Center to just Epcot.

Epcot's 25th Anniversary

Disney World Epcot Figment For almost twenty-five years Epcot has entertained and inspired guests from around the world. The history of the park's development is equally entertaining, as Epcot's original plan was far different than what became a reality...continue reading about Epcot's 25th anniversary in our Disney Columns section.

Even though I love all of the Disney World parks, Epcot is probably my favorite. Everything about it is great. Even though the idea of Epcot is learning, Disney does a great job of still making it fun. The big thrill rides are great too. Even though the only major rides there are Test Track, Mission Space, and Soarin, there is plenty to do. Mission Space is definately the most intense! World Showcase is also cool, especially in the evenings. All of the countries are lit up, and Illuminations is going on. That is the best firework show in Disney World!

EPCOT is by far the best themepark Disney has ever created. Just the site of Spaceship Earth alone facinates me. It is Disney's greatest site to see. Mission Space was worth the wait, and EPCOT is always changing for the better. The park is beautiful with all types of flowers all over the park, plus the Leave a Legacy Pavillion as you enter the park. The park is literaly two worlds in one. World Showcase is wonderful. It truely captures the cultures of each of the countries, and the food is unbelievable! Illuminations never gets old and is the best fireworks display i have ever seen.

Epcot is a great place because it takes all of that stuff that you learn in school and they put it all into a fun ride. There's body wars teaches about the body, mission space not only tells you about a space launch, you actually get an experience on how it is like to be in a space launch. The only problem I have with this is that some rides may not be as exciting as the ones in the other parks and people may not want to learn the stuff taught in school in an actual theme park. I don't know when but before they made Test Track and the Mission Space, I was thinking about how Epcot did not have an enough thrill rides. Well, now that they made Test Track and then, one of my favorites, Mission Space, Disney has done a pretty good job at bringing more rides that attract the people who love fast rides.
