Disney's Hollywood Studios Overview

Disney's Hollywood Studios opened May 1, 1989. It is a theme park devoted to bringing the magic of television, radio, and movies
to the public in a way that only Disney can.
Disney's Hollywood Studios is more than meets the eye. Disney utilizes the studio to make movies and television shows. The portion of the park used for this is closed off
to the public. In fact nearly two thirds of the park is closed off and is used as a working studio.
Disney's Hollywood Studios is host to many of the most popular rides and shows that Walt Disney World has to offer. From thrill rides such as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster to the
ultimate night time experince, Fantasmic!
Disney's Hollywood Studios History

The idea for a park based on favorite movie themes originated with Walt Disney more than
40 years ago when "backlot tours" were limited to a privileged few. He first considered
a park on his own backlot, then looked across the river from the Disney Studios in Burbank,
on land adjacent to Griffith Park. Lack of land combined with potential traffic problems
caused him to look elsewhere; namely, Anaheim. The result was Disneyland.
In the mid 1980s, a greatly expanded production schedule for the Walt Disney Company demanded more facilities. Instead of buying expensive land in California, the company realized it had plenty of land in Florida. This gave them the ability to combine its new production facilities with a chance for Walt Disney World®
guests to see behind the scenes of movie and television production.
During this time period two major events were happening. First, Disney Imagineers were in the planning stages of a new pavilion for Epcot's Future World focusing on the movies and Hollywood. It would have a ride-through attraction, similar to the "Great Movie Ride," and am Audio-Animatronic, behind-the-scenes history of the making of Mickey Mouse cartoons called "Mickey's Movieland."
Second, Universal Pictures was planning to open its own movie themed park in Orlando. Facing the threat of Universal Studios, Florida, the need for production space, and the expansion of Walt Disney World® was enough fuel to have Michael Eisner give the go ahead to create a whole new park, Disney-MGM Studios, rather than one pavilion.
Disney Imagineers wanted a perfect representation of the golden age of Hollywood.
The Walt Disney Company then proceeded to sign an agreement with MGM Studios for the use of its name and logo.
MGM owned many great movie classics which helped bring the classic movie studio theme to the park.
President Michael Eisner announced plans for the Studios publicaly, in 1985.
Construction began in 1986 and a talented staff of Imagineers were brought in to bring the
plans to life. Aside from the thrill rides, Disney Imagineers had to keep in mind that Disney-MGM Studios
was to be a working studio and had to be able to accomplish that task. Imagineers designed
a facility that created the perfect work environment for Disney animators, while at the same time,
allowing guests to witness the animation process from start to finish. In keeping with the classic movie studio theme,
Disney Imagineers continued the tradition that movie studios in California used to have of keeping water towers on their lots for heating and cooling purposes.
The Studios were designed a tower of its own, continuing the tradition. Named the Earffel Tower, Disney's tower however, does not heat or cool anything.
The 130 foot tall tower is empty and is used as a landmark and nothing else.

Awalte7, MD, USAThis park is probably the best park for thrills. I absolutely HATE freefall rides( meaning rides with straight drops) and even I appreciated the tower of terror. The special effects are amazing. The rock and rollercoaster was awesome too! Even with the hour long line we rode it 3 times.
I do wish the park had a little bit more to offer but I am certainly not complaining.

Laura, Bangor, Maine, USAMGM is a wonderful park. The theming of everything is gorgeous, and there is something for everyone to do there. Rock n' Roller Coaster is incredible by both Disney and roller coaster standards. The timing with the music is amazing. The Tower of Terror is great, and I especially enjoy the CMs who play the bellhops...they do a wonderful job to try and scare you. Star Tours, Muppet Vision and The Honey I shurnk the Kids movie set adventure are all great for families. And everyone should go on The Great Movie Ride.
I would also recommend eating at PrimeTime 50's Cafe, the Sci-Fi Dine In Theatre or Mama Melrose's. Sci-Fi has great atmosphere but nothing really special as far as food goes, but it is fun to sit in the cars to eat.

Kevin Holland, Selden NY, USAI feel of all the parks this is the one that has suprised me over the years as it is trying more and more to be the major thrill center at the world but like all things this place needs more space for the expansion of the new attractions and shows otherwise the area known as backstage will not be around when the expansions become too much.
