12/16/2009 3:50 PM EST
Roy E. Disney, nephew of Walt Disney, has died. Disney suffered from cancer, and passed away earlier today. He was 79.
Roy's father, Roy O. and uncle, Walt, both founded the Disney Co. in the 1920s. Roy himself was also very much involved with the company as a writer and producer.
He also caused controversy when he led two investor revolts against the compnay. He was responsible for getting Walt's son-in-law released from the company as well as leading the revolt against Michael Eisner.
Bob Iger, Company president and chief executive, said, "Roy's true passion and focus were preserving and building upon the amazing legacy of Disney animation that was started by his father and uncle. Roy's commitment to the art of animation was unparalleled and will always remain his personal legacy and one of his greatest contributions to Disney's past, present and future."
